In 2020, Roboworld Australasia was approached by a large College in Queensland. They were experiencing issues with maintenance staff retention, and employment. They decided to simplify operations and reduce costs by implementing an autonomous mowing solution, freeing up labour and maintaining a high-quality finish.
What was the issue?
The college owns a large sports field, which is maintained at a premium level. The field is used for track and field events as well as competitive soccer, and rugby union. In order to maintain the pristine couch grass surface, the field is mown twice a week. This takes considerable time and means maintaining a large sports field mower. This tied up a staff member for more than half a day, twice a week.
The solution?
Rather than add more staff to cover the lost time, ground staff decided to invest in robotic mowers to maintain the oval at a consistent cut height. They invested in 2 x L350i Elite robotic mowers, each of which is mowing at 20mm, has a run time of 7 hours and can cover up to 7000m2. The result a field which always looks match ready, for minimal cost in labour.
The College has since added a 3rd L350i, fitted with specialised wheels for extra traction, to maintain the surrounding spectator bank. This is maintained slightly higher at 40mm, and the robot mower has no problem handling the 30-degree slopes.
Completing the installation of the perimeter wire – buried 10 cm in the ground, the wire is never a safety issue, and deep enough to be missed by any coring or de-thatching equipment used by the ground staff.
